About Persephone

In Greek mythology, Persephone was the daughter of Ceres, goddess of grain.  Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, to serve as his queen. Ceres abandoned her duties to search for her daughter, and thus the first winter fell on the Earth.

When Ceres finally found her daughter in the underworld, she bargained with Hades to allow Persephone to return to the world above ground. Hades agreed, but on one condition - if Persephone had eaten anything red since her arrival in the Underworld, she must stay.

Persephone revealed that all she had eaten was six red pomegranate seeds.

So, for six months of the year, our winter, Persephone lives with her husband in the Underworld, and returns to the surface world in springtime and summer.

I discovered bullet cabochons by chance, when I found a stray peridot left behind on the bench at art school.  When I found these in garnet I was inspired to create the Persephone series - to me, they resemble pomegranate seeds.
